Nowadays, many graduates find it hard to get jobs. Some people might think having a qualification is not that important. Whilst employers need some specific skills, many of which are acquired through experience, it does not mean qualifications are obsolete.  Below are some reasons why you need qualifications.

Qualifications are essential for recruitment

A study conducted by the Australian Association for Research in Education concluded that “majority of employers consider formal qualifications essential for job recruitment”. Other aspects such as work experience also strengthen the applicants profile, but if you really need to get your foot in the door, you may need as many formal qualifications as you can get. While experience and skills will help you keep the job, qualifications will help you land the job in the first place. Luckily, you can get qualifications solely based on your experience through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Personal branding

Personal branding is commonly known as the practice of packaging one’s skills and professional experience as advertisers do for brands they represent. Qualifications are very important in this respect as they serve as proof of what you know. In other words, qualifications are still the proof that gives people confidence that you know what you claim to know. This confidence is based on the fact that candidates usually have to meet entry requirements before they even start a course. Before the qualification is awarded, the education provider makes sure the student/trainee has acquired enough skills to meet to meet industry benchmarks. What this means is that, in order to add more credibility to your personal brand, you need as many qualifications as possible. Many companies offer free skills assessment to individuals who wish to get qualifications through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Recognition is a basic human need

Have you been in someone’s office and seen qualifications on their wall? Do you wonder why people celebrate graduation or why a simple ‘good job’ from your employer goes a long way? It is simply because recognition is important for employees and appreciation is a human need with real impact on people’s performance, in the way a qualification is the recognition of the time you spent learning and an appreciation of your efforts and sacrifices.  This is why qualifications mean more than just a piece of paper; they have a symbolic value. They mean ‘achievement’ to yourself and to the world. Simply put, there is no harm having more qualifications. Why not have as many as you can and reap the benefits?
